It’s the end of a shopping era: JCPenney announced earlier this year that, due to financial challenges, it would be closing eight stores around the country by the end of this year.
The department store joins the growing list of retailers, like Macy’s, who are shuttering their doors and scaling back operations during these current tough economic times.
JCPenney’s Struggles
This is not the first time that JCPenney has drastically reduced the amount of stores in operation. In May 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company filed for bankruptcy, which then led to the closing of over 200 brick-and-mortar outlets across the United States. In December of that year, the Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management Inc acquired JCPenney, seemingly bringing it back to life.
At the start of 2025, JCPenney merged with Forever 21 into a new company called Catalyst Brands, which is now also home to Brooks Brothers, Aéropostale, Lucky Brand, Nautica and Eddie Bauer.
Catalyst Brands intends to open 1,800 stores and bring on 60,000 employees in the near future, but in the meantime, JCPenney will have to close seven stores on or by May 25, 2025. Another store, in Annapolis, Maryland, will remain open through August before also closing.
Stores Closing
Here’s a list of the JCPenney stores that are closing later this month:
- San Bruno, California: The Shops at Tanforan
- Denver: The Shops at Northfield
- Pocatello, Idaho: Pine Ridge Mall
- Topeka, Kansas: West Ridge Mall
- Newington, New Hampshire: Fox Run Mall
- Asheville, North Carolina: Asheville Mall
- Charleston, West Virginia: Charleston Town Center.
While a liquidation sale at JCPenney was announced in conjunction with the store closings at these locations, that promotional event has now come to an end. Still, you have until May 25 to hit up these JCPenney stores to get some good deals on clothes, home goods, shoes and more, which, depending on each store, might be offered at a discount.
While it might be hard to say goodbye to your local JCPenney, there is still an opportunity to shop at your favorite department store one last time and take home not just some high quality items, but savings and memories, too.
