Macy’s stores have been around for well over 100 years, weathering more economic ups and downs than the average department store. But the recent tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on U.S. trading partners will be making many goods more expensive than before. Apparel, home goods and appliances are among the items that will be hardest hit by tariffs.
Macy’s CEO Tony Spring told CNBC that around 20% of the company’s merchandise comes from China. Thus, Macy’s stores will raise prices and also stop carrying some items.
Where can consumers go to get some of the same kinds of goods they purchase at Macy’s, but for cheaper prices? Here are seven alternatives to the retailer.
TJ Maxx
If you’ve ever tooled around a TJ Maxx, flipped through its wide variety of clothing, home goods, kitchen items, toys and sporting goods to name a few, you might not even realize that you’re getting such a great deal. One of the reasons TJ Maxx can keep such low prices is that it resells merchandise that other stores couldn’t move. Thus, you’re likely to find far better prices on items similar to that which you might have gotten at a Macy’s.
Ross Dress for Less
Ross Dress for Less has always made it plain that you’re going to find clothing for affordable prices at its stores. While you might not find the same brands, and always the same quality as some of the brands that Macy’s carries, with some diligent searching, you will likely be able to check at least a few items off your list for less. It’s no surprise as Ross is owned by the same parent company as TJ Maxx, TJX.
Burlington
The one-stop-shop for clothes, shoes and coats, among other items, is also built on a model much like TJ Maxx. Burlington also sells products that are considered excess inventory or off-season, driving down prices. While you might not get the latest fashion or the hottest trends, you’ll probably find things that meet your needs at a much friendlier price point.
Kohl’s
While overall, the big-box retailer Kohl’s may not be significantly cheaper than Macy’s on many products, Kohl’s incentivizes shoppers through massive clearance sales several times per year, and through its “Kohl’s cash” — essentially dollars earned on purchases that can be used toward future purchases.
Nordstrom Rack
Nordstrom Rack is a cheaper alternative not only to Macy’s but its own parent company, Nordstrom. That’s because, like TJ Maxx and Ross Dress for Less, it also sells overflow merchandise, in this case, from Nordstrom.
Poshmark
If you don’t need everything you purchase to be brand new, then you should definitely check out Poshmark, the online retailer of gently used and sometimes new fashion, home décor and even beauty products. Individual sellers often get rid of items in very good condition for remarkably low prices.
eBay
One last online option could be potentially much cheaper if you’re able to spend the time bidding on auction items — eBay. While there are some items you can purchase outright without having to bid, sometimes patience and persistence can pay off here to net you a great price on a cool item.
