You probably already know that Ikea sells not only furniture but also Swedish meatballs, but do you know much else about the brand? It was founded in 1943 when then 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad began selling small, functional goods like pens and wallets in his hometown of Småland. Right off the bat, Ikea was all about meeting needs in a straightforward, no-fuss and elegant way.
Over the years, Ikea has grown into a mammoth retailer, famous not only for its practical items, but also for its relative affordability when compared with other home goods stores. Though generally budget-friendly, Ikea does carry some items that could break the bank if you’re not careful. Let’s look at eight of the most expensive items at Ikea in February. Can you afford them?
24-Inch by 60-Inch Oak Kitchen Door
- Price: $397
Doors are sort of underrated, don’t you think? They can really set the tone of the room you’re about to enter. If you buy the Vedhamn oak kitchen door, you’re likely setting a tone that weaves simplicity with functionality (which is essentially the essence of Ikea). This item is a winner with the seven who’ve reviewed it; it has garnered just shy of 5 stars.
Kitchen Work Bench/Workspace
- Price: $699
The Rimforsa kitchen work bench, made of stainless steel and bamboo, blends functionality with sleek aesthetics. But there is a point of confusion that arises when looking at it; it doesn’t look like you can sit on it and thus does not appear to be a bench. It’s more like a work space. You can use the top shelf for meal prep and the two lower racks for storing tableware or cookware. This is a well-reviewed item, with 4.7 out of 5 stars based on 49 reviews.
King Bed Frame With Storage
- Price: $1,109
The Idanäs bed frame with storage is king-sized and comes in dark brown or white. It features built-in drawers underneath, which Ikea describes as “soft closing.” As of Feb. 4, this item has 43 reviews. By and large, buyers are pleased with this sturdy, roomy bed frame.
Geometric Hand-Knotted Rug
- Price: $1,199.99
This Vimpelgräs low-pile rug is hand-knotted — a feature that instantly ups the price. Inspired by Afghan artistry, it features a geometric pattern in a rich red. Its area is 43.92 square feet and is close to 8 feet in length and over 6.5 feet in width. As of Feb. 4, this item has no reviews. Perhaps nobody is willing to spend $1,200 on a rug when you can buy something more affordable on Ruggable?
Outdoor 4-Seat Set With Small Coffee Table
- Price: $1,759.99
It’s a little surprising that the Havsten/Lågaskär four-seat outdoor set, available in light beige, is the most expensive item in the outdoor patio furniture department at Ikea. Though it looks cozy, it’s not particularly spacious, seating only four and with a coffee table that doesn’t look much bigger than a poof ottoman. It’s also not exactly raking in great reviews — scoring 2.3 out of 5 stars, collectively.
Sleeper Sofa
- Price: $1,999
The Finnala sleeper sofa comes in a mild golden brown hue or solid black. One reviewer praised this item, calling it “a great sofa bed” and said they’d been looking for something like it at other retailers for a while. Ikea recommends queen size sheets for this item.
Four-Door Fridge
- Price: $2,999
Home chefs who need ample storage for perishables will love the Överskådlig French door refrigerator, which has four doors and comes in stainless steel color. Ample storage and easy access to different compartments aren’t the only standout features of this fridge; it also has a water/ice maker and an inbuilt fan to circulate air and keep temperatures consistent. Most of the 12 reviewers of this item are pleased with it, but one reviewer gave it only one star on account of it having storage lacking in height and a water filter that is complicated and expensive to replace.
6-Seat Sectional With Chaise
- Price: $4,500
The Jättebo sectional, six-seat, with a chaise comes in a striking dark yellow-green color. The shade is pretty untraditional, but it must be working for many wealthy folks if it’s selling for $4,500 at Ikea. This modular piece features ample storage space under the seat in the chaise lounge and seat modules. As of Feb. 4, this item has no customer reviews.
