Sam’s Club is known for its deals, bulk discounts and convenient scan-and-go checkout service through their app. But there are some items that even the most loyal shoppers won’t touch. After some cost comparison, it’s clear that not everything the warehouse offers is the best price customers can get.
Here’s what some shoppers on Reddit say to avoid buying at Sam’s Club.
Ground Beef
Making some burgers? Sam’s Club shouldn’t be the only stop you make. Reddit user samj732 posted in the r/Frugal subreddit that ground beef is one of the items where the price just isn’t right at Sam’s Club. “It’s cheaper at Walmart for me.”
That proved to be true: Sam’s Club sells grass fed ground beef for $9.16 a pound, while Walmart sells it for $6.97 a pound, according to the retailers’ websites.
Milk
For those using milk on a daily basis, it’s best not to stock up at Sam’s Club. A Reddit user named whatchagonadot posted on the r/SamsClub subreddit that milk can be found cheaper elsewhere. “Milk at Sam’s is 50 cents more expensive than at Walmart and Aldi.”
As of late April, a gallon of 2% milk at Sam’s Club was $3.06, while at Walmart, it would only cost $2.06.
Avocados
User B4got posted on the r/SamClub subreddit: “Aldi beats all those prices, Avocados .69 cents, try beating that.”
These prices likely depend on your location. For us, avocados at Aldi aren’t $0.69 each, according to the website — they’re $1.02 each. But, that’s still cheaper than the Sam’s Club price of $1.72 each.
Acetaminophen
When comparing over-the-counter drugs, user AcanthocephalaNo1207 posted in r/Frugal, “Walmart has the Equate brand, which is cheaper than Member’s Mark brand sold at Sam’s.”
Equate (one of Walmart’s house brands) acetaminophen is $3.94 for a bottle of 200 extra-strength caplets. Sam’s Club’s Member’s Mark acetaminophen costs $13.47 for 400 extra-strength caplets, which is more expensive per caplet than at Walmart.
Beer
Though many people stock up on alcohol for parties at Sam’s Club, Reddit user psych0h0sebeast posted in the r/Frugal subreddit that not all alcohol there is a steal. “While Sam’s is great for liquor prices, it’s not always the cheapest for beer.”
Looking at a 24-pack of Modelo at Sam’s Club, it costs $26.46. The same pack at Food 4 Less costs $23.99 — so it might be a better idea to pick up beer from the grocery store.
Editor’s note: Prices are accurate as of April 29, 2025. Prices may vary by location and are subject to change.
