The change in season from fall to winter brings frigid temperatures, along with ice and snow in some areas. For older shoppers, prepping for the coldest months of winter means stocking up on items that can help them stay warm, save on energy costs and make life a little easier.

Here are some of the things older shoppers are buying at Walmart this winter.

Heated Throws

For winter cold, regular throws are great to have handy, but heated throws take warmth and comfort to the next level. Older people who are looking to save on heating costs this winter will appreciate a heated throw that will offer low-cost warmth — for $26.99 — instead of having to crank up the heat.

Warm Socks

Also on the list of winter musts for older shoppers are slipper socks. These cozy socks allow for comfortable lounging while keeping feet warm, and the grips on the bottom prevent slipping when walking around the house. A six-pack of crew-style socks is $19.99, and these also come in single pairs or 24-packs in a variety of colors.

However, slipper socks don’t work well with shoes — but multitasking merino wool socks do. They’ll keep feet warm while wicking away moisture. Walmart sells a three-pack of merino wool socks — suitable for men or women — for $10.99.

Thermal Underwear

Layering is a great way to minimize heat loss in bone-chilling temperatures, and Walmart has thermal underwear sets for men and women to help. Two-piece, fleece-lined thermal sets for men are $19.99, and the same type of thermal sets for women are also $19.99.

Space Heaters

A space heater can help save on winter utility bills. The trick is to use it in the most-occupied room during the day while lowering the main thermostat and saving on energy. Walmart stocks a variety of space heaters, including a Lasko 1500-watt oscillating tower space heater for $56.92, which can heat up to 300 square feet.

Windshield Covers

A windshield cover can help older people avoid the time-consuming aggravation of clearing ice or snow from their windshield during the colder months. Walmart sells a FrostGuard GO winter windshield cover for $9.47, which fits most cars, small trucks and SUVs. Simply place it across the vehicle’s windshield, and secure the side panels in each of the doors to avoid the cover being blown off or stolen.

Draft Stoppers

Draft stoppers are another essential item for older shoppers to buy at Walmart for the coldest months of winter. They can be used at the bottom of doors or at window sills to stop drafts and reduce energy bills. Walmart stocks several types, including the Frost King door or window draft stop for $9.83, which is 3 feet long and has a zippered, removable, washable cover.

Flashlights

When the power goes out, it’s smart to have a flashlight handy. Fumbling around in the dark can increase the risks of accidents or falls. Walmart sells a 10-pack of Ozark Trail 50-lumen mini flashlights for $12.97. These can be stored in every room of the home, ensuring that a flashlight is always within reach.
