The only good thing about a winter that brought historic snowfall and subzero cold spells to much of the country is that, at some point, it has to end.

Retirees who budget ahead are already planning for March — and with a few select choices from Walmart’s Great Value brand, they can plan to buy more for less this spring.

Automatic Dishwasher Gel

  • Price: $4.48

Clean dishes might not be where you want to skimp on quality to save a few bucks while spring cleaning — but the good news is that you don’t have to.

Consumer Reports ranks Great Value as its overall top-rated dishwasher gel, finding it outperforms even the high-end Cascade Complete + Oxi Dawn in several key categories.

The highly rated store brand — Walmart shoppers give it 4.5 stars after over13,000 reviews — costs $4.48 for a 75-ounce container, or $0.06 per ounce.

Even if you bulk-buy a massive 125-ounce jug of Cascade, you’ll pay $22.94, or more than $0.18 an ounce — over three times the cost.

Red Plastic Party Cups

  • Price: $3.87 (regularly $4.32)

For millions of retirees, spring is the season of porches, picnics and patio parties, all of which call for stacks of familiar red Solo cups. However, Great Value’s nearly identical alternative gets 4.4 stars, proof that just as with many products whose ubiquity earns it a generic trademark, no one will ever know or care if you choose a lower-cost alternative.

Great Value’s 9-ounce disposable red party cups cost $3.87 for 50, or $7.74 for 100. On the other hand, two 50-packs of 9-ounce Solo cups cost $23.78 — three times as much.

Automatic Spray Mop Starter Kit

  • Price: $19.98

If you’re a retiree looking for a lightweight and simple alternative to your dirty old mop, you might be considering a Swiffer Wet Jet starter bundle if your floors got away from you this winter. However, you don’t have to spend $34.88 on the big brand name when you can get a highly rated (4.4 stars) and quality-comparable Great Value kit that gives you everything you need to get started for just under $20 — but the long-term savings will pay you back even more over time.

A 24-pack of Great Value replacement pads costs $11.97, or about $0.50 each, compared with $14.94, or about $0.62 each, for Swiffer. With that in mind, the Great Value spray mop works with Swiffer pads if you’re ever in a pinch.

Scented Oil Plug-Ins

  • Price: $2.88

Retirees who want that spring fresh smell all year long can get a two-pack of Great Value scented oil plug-in warmers for $2.88, or just $1.44 each. But just as with the Swiffer alternative spray mop, the real savings come slowly over time. A Great Value five-pack of refill cartridges costs $7.97. A five-pack of Glade refills costs about $12.
