Why Banks Close Their Branches

TD Bank’s decision to close its branches may come off the heels of the settlement, but there are many reasons why financial institutions shut down different locations.

“Banks usually close branches because the area is not likely to be profitable for them or they already have too many branches in that area for the population,” said Gates Little, president and CEO of altLINE and The Southern Bank Company. “They may also close the branch because their strategy has changed, and they believe that they can serve customers more efficiently through apps or online options.”

Your Options as a Customer

If your local TD branch is closing, you can always check TD Bank’s official website to find out where other branches are located. Or you can run a quick internet search to do the same thing.

And if you’re thinking about switching banks altogether, your options include:

  • Switch to online banking: You can often get everything you need without ever having to go to a physical branch.
  • Find a smaller bank: If you prefer an in-person experience, look for a small or local bank in your area.
  • Look for a bank with a strong presence in your area: You can also choose a well-known national or international institution. Do a little research to find out where its headquarters is located and how many branches it has. If it’s well-established with a good reputation, there’s a lower chance of it closing in the future.
