In the past, TD Ameritrade offered brokerage and retirement accounts that let customers invest in stocks, mutual funds, options, exchange-traded funds, bonds and brokered certificates of deposit. But the company was acquired by Charles Schwab in 2020, which means you can now handle all your investment and trading needs online or through Charles Schwab.

Current TD Ameritrade Promotions

Since TD Ameritrade was acquired by Charles Schwab, it doesn’t have any active bonuses. Charles Schwab, however, offers similar investment options and often runs promotions that savers should check out.

Expired TD Ameritrade Promotions

Although theses TD Ameritrade promotions are no longer available, they give a snapshot of the offers previously provided by the company.

TD Ameritrade Brokerage or Retirement Account Promotion: Up To $2,500 Cash Bonus

If you had at least $250,000 to open a TD Ameritrade individual or joint brokerage account or an individual retirement account, you had access to commission-free online trading and a large library of research and investment learning tools. Here’s how the bonus worked:

• Cash value: Up to $2,500, depending on the amount you deposit. Here are the different tiers:
  • $250,000 to $499,999: $350 cash bonus
  • $500,000 to $999,999: $700 cash bonus
  • $1 million to $1,999,999: $1,500 cash bonus
  • $2 million or more: $2,500 cash bonus
• Minimum deposit to qualify: $250,000
• How you got it: Open a brokerage or IRA account online and fund the account within 60 days. Maintain the balance for at least 12 months — although losses from market volatility are allowed.
• When you got it: Three to five business days after funding the account
• Terms and conditions: Had to use a TD Ameritrade coupon code

TD Ameritrade Essential Portfolios Account Promotion: Up To $1,650 Cash Bonus

Opening an Essentials Portfolios account came with a cash bonus of up to $1,500. In addition, you could get a $150 rebate to cover any transfer fees you might be charged when you sent your funds over to TD Ameritrade. Here’s more:

• Cash value: Up to $1,650, depending on the amount you deposit. Here are the different tiers:
  • $10,000 to $49,999: $50 cash bonus
  • $50,000 to $99,999: $200 cash bonus
  • $100,000 to $249,999: $500 cash bonus
  • $250,000 to $499,999: $1,000 cash bonus
  • $500,000 or more: $1,500 cash bonus
  • Transfer of $10,000 or more: $150 transfer rebate
• Minimum deposit to qualify: $10,000
• How you got it: Open a brokerage or IRA account and then call to have your account registered for the offer. You had to fund the account within 180 days and then maintain the balance for at least 12 months — though losses from market volatility are allowed.
• When you got it: Three to four weeks after funding the account
• Terms and conditions: Had to use TD Ameritrade coupon code

TD Ameritrade Referral Promotion: $50 Per Referral

This promotion allowed you to earn extra cash by referring friends, family and colleagues to TD Ameritrade. You got $50 for each referral who opens an account, up to $2,500 per month. The referred person who opened an account could’ve earned up to $1,000, depending on how much they deposited. Here’s how the TD Ameritrade bonus worked:

• Cash value: $50 per successful referral, up to $2,500 per month; friends being referred earned up to $1,000 each, based on the initial deposit
• Minimum deposit to qualify: $25,000 for the referred friend
• How you got it: By logging in to your TD Ameritrade account, entering your friend’s email and submitting the information.
• When you got it: One to two business days after the referred friend makes a qualifying deposit into their new account
• Terms and conditions: You could refer up to 10 people per day and 50 per month. The cash bonus was limited to $2,500 per month.

How To Open a TD Ameritrade Account

Since TD Ameritrade has merged with Charles Schwab, you can now open an account with Charles Schwab to access the same high-quality investment tools and resources.

To get started, apply online. The process is straightforward and you should be prepared to provide the following:

• Social Security or tax ID number for U.S. citizens.
• Foreign tax ID, passport or visa number for non-U.S. citizens
• Employer’s name, phone number and address
