The American Cleaning Institute reported that 80% of Americans have spring cleaning plans this year. If you’re among this majority, you may as well take the opportunity to declutter and gather up unwanted household items that are taking up your space.

While donating or throwing away some things makes sense, selling items in decent condition is a smart way to make extra cash for your emergency fund, high-interest debt or another need. Whether you prefer selling locally or shipping packages, the six apps below can help you profit from your spring cleaning finds.

Do you like the idea of making extra money? Here’s how to use AI to start a side gig fast.

Nextdoor

Nextdoor is a good choice to sell your items in person to your neighbors and others in nearby communities. The local social networking app allows you to make posts for various item types in its “For Sale & Free” section and unlike with many other platforms, you won’t pay any listing or selling fees. Plus, you can choose a safe payment method that minimizes potential costs.

If you have too many items to post individually, you could create and share an event for a yard sale or search Nextdoor for flea markets and other convenient places to sell items.

eBay

Putting your spring cleaning finds on eBay gives you exposure to the platform’s estimated 134 million buyers. Besides being very popular, the app stands out for its selling options, such as letting buyers bid on your things, buy them at a set price or submit a proposed amount. Plus, you can set up your listings to allow for local pickups alongside domestic and international shipping.

You typically can create 250 free listings each month, but there are other fees that depend on the item’s category, sale price and listing type/features. For example, the 13.6% final value fee on a $500 smartphone would cost $68 alone. Plus, payment fees can further cut your profit.

Decluttr

If you’d rather avoid having to find a buyer, you can use the Decluttr app to trade in certain tech products, like phones, game consoles, laptops and speakers. It has you fill in some basics about your item or scan its barcode and then it gives you an instant estimate. Note that this amount may be less than what you could get selling your items the normal way.

If you’re happy with the offer, Decluttr will give you a free UPS shipping label for mailing your package. After Decluttr receives your item as described, the payout happens via PayPal, direct deposit or a charitable donation.

Poshmark

Poshmark is a popular app for listing your unwanted clothes, accessories, shoes and makeup. It’s made for selling nationally and shipping the items rather than arranging local pickups. You don’t pay anything to post your item at your preferred price.

When a buyer purchases your item, Poshmark gives you a prepaid shipping label to use. The platform doesn’t hand over your earnings until the buyer gets the item. It charges somewhat high commission fees of $2.95 for items under $15 and 20% for more expensive items, but there aren’t any payment processing fees.

OfferUp

OfferUp is similar to Nextdoor in that you can target potential buyers in your area, but it’s a dedicated marketplace platform. The app lets you set up free item listings, get offers and communicate with potential buyers via chat. Besides handling transactions locally, you can pay a 12.9% selling fee and additional shipping costs to ship items to buyers around the U.S.

Like eBay, OfferUp has paid upgrades that can help more potential buyers see your items or let you make more monthly listings. The platform’s subscriptions can help you save money if you plan on selling or promoting many items.

Swappa

If you’re selling electronics, sneakers or eligible fitness equipment, you might prefer Swappa for its simpler fee structure than eBay. This platform charges you a low 3% selling fee in addition to any Stripe or PayPal payment processing fees.

You can search for the item you want to sell, see the average selling price and set up your listing for buyers. Swappa also has a trade-in option for select products and includes multiple partners and offer amounts to consider. However, the platform has strict condition criteria for electronics, so it’s not ideal if your item has flaws.
