After weeks of packing school lunches and doing countless hours of homework, it’s time to slow down, enjoy fun times by the pool, watch movies and treasure moments with the family. Time is moving by way too quickly and before I know it, my boys will be grown.
You won’t hear too many parents say that they are excited for summer to arrive. To the contrary, many parents dread the summer months because they know that the days can be long and boring if they don’t have a plan of action in place for every day of the week.

Many movie theaters across the country will open their doors and offer free or inexpensive movies — some running for the second time around and some brand new. Cobb Theaters offers free movies three days a week, while Regal Cinemas offers a $1 summer movie express two days a week.
Going to the movies is a great way to enjoy a few good laughs while cooling off from the summer heat. My boys and I saw “Sing” last summer for free, and this year we are looking forward to seeing “The Boss Baby.” I am excited about saving money, but in all honesty, I laugh just as much as my boys do during these movies.
The Kids Bowl Free program allows children to bowl two free games every day during the summer months. You will need to pay for shoe rental but that is only a few dollars per child. This is a great way to get kids off of their electronic devices and onto their feet.
While my bowling skills may not be that great, and my boys laugh at my gutter balls, I treasure the times that we spend at the bowling alley during the summer months. My wallet is also happy, as I am only spending a few dollars for shoe rental.
The Kids Skate Free program allows children to skate free, though the amount and age limits vary by location. You will need to pay for skate rental, but that is a very minimal cost. This is such a fun way to improve balance and flexibility in your children, and it keeps them moving.
Free and Inexpensive Crafts
Once a month, Home Depot offers a free kids’ workshop. This workshop provides a fun environment that mixes skill-building, creativity and safety. My boys and I look forward to this workshop each month and the craft that they will be making. I even like to participate and help with the assembly. My boys like that I am joining in on the excitement. At one of the recent workshops, we made a bean bag toss, which was super fun.

Another inexpensive option for kid’s crafts is Michaels Arts & Crafts. Their Camp Creativity is seven weeks of fun-filled arts and crafts for kids of all ages. Some of the classes are free, and nothing is over $5. If your kids love to be creative, these classes are a must. My boys are looking forward to the free slime-making class.

Summer Reading Programs
One of the best ways to ensure that your children have a love for reading is to set aside a time for it daily. I believe that this is one of the reasons why my boys have such a passion for reading. Encourage your children’s love of reading during the summer months. Many libraries offer free summer reading programs and offer prizes as incentives when children complete a certain amount of books.
Check with your local library to see what they offer. Programs such as this not only show the importance of reading but that it can also be fun. Make reading a time that your children will remember for years to come.
Here’s to a summer of laughs, great memories and lots of money left in your wallet.
