Last September, a little more than a year after its disastrous Q2 2023 earnings report was released, Big Lots filed for bankruptcy. Then, in December, the once formidable mega-retailer announced that it would permanently shut down all of its locations in the coming months. Hold on, though — that’s not the end of the story.
On Dec. 20, Big Lots announced a transaction with liquidation firm Gordon Brothers Retail Partners — a deal that would transfer over 200 to 400 Big Lots stores to Variety Wholesalers, Inc., which intends to keep open the stores acquired in the deal under the Big Lots brand. So, Big Lots isn’t on its deathbed, after all, but many of its stores have already shut down and more closures are expected.
This retailer’s loss is the consumer’s win, though. Amid all the turbulence, Big Lots is hosting an “All Stores Closing” sale — a title that was likely agreed upon before Gordon Brothers Retail Partners stepped in.
