It’s time to go shopping for winter outfits. The seasons are changing and the temperature is dropping, but for lots of brands, prices are staying the same or even going up. Are you worried you won’t be able to stay within your budget when you start to hunt for deals? Never fear — affordable brands are here.

Here are five brands to shop this winter that look expensive, but are actually affordable.

In contrast, here are four clothing brands to avoid.

Everlane

Everlane combines timeless style with sustainability, which relates with many shoppers, according to Albert Varkki, retail and shopping expert and cofounder of luxury brand Von Baer.

“Their prices usually feature classic silhouettes and high-quality materials such as merino wool and recycled cashmere, enabling consumers to invest in wardrobe staples that last,” he said.

As for the items to put in your shopping bag, Varkki said, “Look at their oversized alpaca sweaters, cashmere crewnecks and high-rise straight-leg jeans. These versatile and stylish items provide a polished look without the high-end price.”

Zara

“Ladies can’t go past this go-to brand for pieces that look stunning and sophisticated, yet are at a price point that most can afford,” said Jo Hayes, founder and CEO of Etiquette Expert.

“The elegance factor is reflected by the fact that Princess Catherine is a regular Zara wearer. Her wardrobe featuring Zara blazers, alongside designer labels 100 times more expensive,” Hayes added. “Their tweed blazers are particularly buy-worthy.”

Mango

“Mango’s collection channels European elegance with a focus on sleek and sophisticated designs that look trendy and edgy,” Varkki explained. “Their winter collection usually includes high-quality materials such as wool blends and faux leather that add a hint of luxury at a fraction of designer prices.”

Varkki recommended shoppers search for tailored coats, pleated trousers and ribbed knit dresses. “Mango’s coats are especially popular for achieving that high-end look without any overspending, while their knitwear is an amazing combination of comfort and class,” he added.

J. Crew

Classic and chic — J. Crew is a brand that punches above its weight in terms of elegant styling, at an affordable price, according to Hayes.

“Everything one needs to curate a classic capsule wardrobe,” Hayes said, “you’ll be stepping out in Fifth-Ave-level style, on a Bronx budget.”

Abercombie & Fitch

“Abercombie has redefined its brand image, providing pieces with an elevated look and quality that showcase modern styles,” Varkki explained. “The brand’s outerwear and sweaters usually have a sleek design aesthetic that looks premium without the premium price.

“Check out their winter coats, fleece-lined flannel shirts and high-quality knitwear,” he said. “The Abercombie Sherpa-lined jackets and puffers have become a seasonal favorite, providing extra warmth and a sophisticated look for a reasonable price.”

Editor’s note: Pricing and availability may vary depending on location.
