There is so much to enjoy about summer — the weather, the get-togethers and, of course, the food. Shopping seasonally can be a great way to get the best food that’s currently being harvested and served up at your local grocery store, as well as a time to save money.

“There are a variety of reasons why individuals want to stretch their food budget,” said Lisa Richards, nutritionist and creator of The Candida Diet. “Often it is assumed that stretching your food budget also means eating less healthy than you prefer, but this doesn’t have to be the case. Foods that are high in nutrients do not have to be expensive.”

If you are looking to be frugal and fit, Richards and a few other shopping experts have “easy ways to reach your fitness goals through nutrition while on a tight budget” during this time of year.

Here are five groceries frugal people buy during the summer.

Whole Grains

“Whole grain alternatives like pasta and rice are often just as cost effective as the more refined versions,” Richards pointed out.

And if you buy rice, flour and other whole grains in bulk, you can make your budget stretch at the checkout counter.

“Having a frugal attitude does not mean giving up your favorite things, but rather finding ways to acquire them creatively,” said Adam Wood, the co-founder of RevenueGeeks. “White rice normally costs between $1 and $2 per pound, whereas all-purpose flour typically costs between $0.50 and $1.”

Spices and Herbs

The most flavorful and valuable spices don’t need to be ground or fresh, according to Wood.

“There is no doubt that frugal people must purchase high-quality dried spices and herbs,” he said. “Using high-quality flavors is another category where less is more when people combine them with quality ingredients.”

Dairy Products and Eggs

While dairy products and eggs are available 365 days out of the year, the prices on these grocery items usually drop during the summer due to increased production, Wood said.

“It is common for frugal people to take advantage of this opportunity to buy extra to use for baking,” Wood explained. “Many dishes can be prepared with eggs in the summer since eggs have a relatively long shelf life. A dozen regular eggs usually cost between $2 and $3, and a gallon of milk costs between $3 and $4.”

Beans and Legumes

Packing in the protein for cheap is not an easy feat. It’s even harder if you are someone who does not eat animal products or cannot afford to feed a whole family with meat.

“Beans and legumes are inexpensive ways to get in plant-based proteins along with many other essential vitamins and minerals for reaching your fitness goals,” Richards said.

Meat

On the other hand, ’tis the season to fire up the grill and barbecue, which makes it the perfect time to head to the butcher at your local grocery store for your favorite cuts.

“Although it’s a common misconception that meat is pricey, it’s incredibly affordable when considering its density and nutritious worth,” Wood said. “Cost-conscious consumers never stop purchasing meat. A pound of chicken typically costs between $3 and $4.
