There’s really only one major reason why you’d want to buy used home appliances and that’s the potential for some significant cost savings. Considering how much new appliances tend to cost, you’d think that their used counterparts would be much less expensive and therefore easier on your wallet.

Surprisingly, though, this isn’t always the case. That’s why it’s important to do some price comparisons before buying the appliances you need. Just because it’s used doesn’t mean it’ll automatically save you money.

Here are some home appliances that cost more used than new.

Also see household appliances that frugal people tend to invest in.

Vintage-Style Refrigerator

According to HomeGuide, a basic refrigerator costs between $200 and $600, while a mid-range one goes for as much as $2,300. This is for new appliances, but what about used?

At Lowe’s, you can buy a retro refrigerator with a bottom freezer for $899.00 new. While it’s not the same brand, you can get another vintage refrigerator — this one from 1940 — on eBay for $1,000.

Aside from paying over $100 more for the used appliance, you’re also losing out on a potential manufacturer’s warranty that would protect your new refrigerator from everyday wear and tear and other issues.

Samsung Washer and Dryer Set

A mid-range washing machine costs between $700 and $1,300 when purchased new. A brand new clothes dryer will run you $800 to $1,200.

Take Samsung’s washing machines and dryers as an example. A new stackable dryer costs $629.99 right now at Best Buy, while a matching washing machine also currently costs $629.99. That’s a grand total of $1,259.98, excluding taxes or shipping and handling fees.

Depending on where you shop, you can find astronomical prices on similar items. On eBay, for instance, a used washer and dryer combination — also from Samsung — is listed for $11,000 (or best offer). That’s a massive price increase for something that’s already been owned and used before.

U.S. Range (With Standard Oven)

On eBay, you can find a used range with four burners and a standard oven for $2,995.00. It uses natural gas and appears to be in good condition, despite being used.

While the new version of this household appliance costs more, you can find similar quality ranges for much less money. For example, this Kratos gas range from Central Restaurant Products has six burners and costs $1,374. That’s roughly $1,600 less when purchased new.

For context, HomeGuide estimates that a basic stove with range costs $530 to $600, while a mid-range version goes for as much as $1,300. Even the new version, unless you go with higher-end brands, will cost you less than used in this particular case.

Miele Dishwasher

Online, you can get an open-box built-under freshwater dishwasher from Miele for $4,931. It’s ADA-compliant and has what you’d need, whether you run a busy household and have a large kitchen or you need it for a small restaurant.

Although it’s practically new, you could still find better deals on similar dishwashers elsewhere. Another Miele dishwasher, also measured at 24 inches, only costs $1,349 when purchased new. Both options come with free shipping.

What’s worth noting is that the typical cost of dishwashers is much less than the used Miele online. A basic machine costs $400 to $800, while a mid-range option is $800 to $1,200. Even higher-end models usually cost no more than $3,000.

Under-Sink Filtration System

Under-sink filtration systems don’t usually cost that much, especially compared to larger home appliances. A basic one goes for $50 to $100, while high-end ones cap out at about $600.

On Amazon, you can buy a brand new Watts Premier five-stage reverse osmosis system for your kitchen for $269.01. A similar product, but with four-stage filtration, costs $399.99 on eBay.

Wine Refrigerator

Are you in the market for a wine refrigerator? You can buy a pre-owned one that holds 52 bottles from Frigidaire for $685 on eBay. Or you can get a new version from AJ Madison for $650.10 — that’s about $35 less.

Keep in mind that new wine refrigerators usually cost anywhere from $230 for a basic one up to $2,800 for a high-end one.
