Black Friday may be the most hyped shopping day of the year, but savvy shoppers know that Labor Day weekend can offer even deeper discounts — especially on seasonal items retailers are eager to clear out. According to a recent Rakuten survey, 71% of shoppers said that mid-summer online sales rival Black Friday, and 66% actively seek out alternative sales during the biggest summer online shopping events.
If you’re shopping for deals in these three categories in particular, now’s the time to score discounts that rival or even beat Black Friday prices.
Outdoor Gear and Patio Essentials
Grills, patio furniture and pool accessories will all be heavily discounted over Labor Day weekend as retailers clear summer stock.
“You’ll generally see 30% to 70% off these items during Labor Day versus 10% to 30% during Black Friday,” said Ashley Feinstein Gerstley, shopping and saving strategist at Rakuten. “Also, inventory is generally more limited during Black Friday.”
Feinstein Gerstley recommended heading to Home Depot and Lowe’s for big markdowns on grills, patio furniture and garden gear, and Target for pool accessories, umbrellas and seasonal decor at steep clearance prices.
Mattresses and Home Goods
“Many stores run their biggest mattress sales of the year over Labor Day weekend,” Feinstein Gerstley said.
Expect to see discounts of 30% to 60% on mattresses from top brands, including Saatva, Purple, Tempur-Pedic and Casper. For discounts on home goods, bedding and small furniture pieces, shop at Bed Bath & Beyond, Feinstein Gerstley said.
Summer Clothing and Footwear
The end of the season is typically the best time to stock up on clothes and shoes.
“You can see 20% to 70% off warm-weather apparel and shoes during Labor Day sales versus 10% to 30% during Black Friday,” Feinstein Gerstley said. “Black Friday is more focused on winter apparel.”
Head to Old Navy and Gap for up to 70% off on summer apparel; Nordstrom Rack and Macy’s for discounts on brand-name shoes, sandals and clothing; and Target for seasonal kids’ clothing and footwear at deep discounts.
