While the U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts that residential electricity prices will only rise a modest 2% in 2025 before accounting for inflation, most Americans are likely looking for ways to save on energy costs this winter.Â
Consider these Lowe’s items under $50 to help reduce utility bills.Â
LED Light Bulbs
According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), LED bulbs use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last up to 25 times longer.
Lowe’s offers eight-packs of 60-watt Warm White or Soft White LED bulbs for $17.99 — both of which are good color choices for the inside of your home. LED bulbs are available at Lowe’s in a variety of wattages and colors.Â
Caulk
Sealing air leaks, such as those around windows, can save you up to 10% on your yearly energy bills, according to the DOE. It suggests purchasing one-half cartridge per door or window that needs sealing.
Different applications require different types of caulk, so make sure you choose the correct product. A bestseller at Lowe’s is GE Advanced Silicone 2 Caulk for windows, doors and exteriors at $10.98 per cartridge.Â
Weatherstripping
Just like caulk, weatherstripping can also seal air leaks and help you save up to 10% per year on energy bills. Lowe’s sells a variety of weatherstripping materials, including M-D Black Door Seal Silicone Door Weatherstrip for $22.98.Â
Programmable Thermostat
Save an additional 10% per year on heating (and cooling) with a programmable thermostat. During the winter, the DOE recommends setting your thermostat from 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit while you’re awake at home, and setting it lower if you’re gone during the day or sleeping.Â
A bestselling item at Lowe’s is the Honeywell Home 5 2-Day Programmable Thermostat for $49.98, which allows you to program the thermostat for your lifestyle and save.
Portable Space Heater
Using a portable space heater can keep your central heating system from running as much, and you can easily move it from room to room. But it’s important to use space heaters sparingly because running them for hours upon hours or overnight can add up.Â
Utilitech 1500-Watt Ceramic Tower Indoor Electric Space Heater with Thermostat for $49.98 is perfect for medium-size areas. It heats up to 200 square feet, and its 70-degree, wide-angle oscillation increases heating coverage by 20%. Plus, it has a tip-over safety switch.
Water Heater Blanket
The DOE estimates that insulating your electric water heater can save 7% to 16% in water heating costs. Check to see if your water heater is warm to the touch. If so, insulating it could help reduce up to 45% of standby heat loss.Â
Lowe’s sells a Frost King Water Heater Blanket for $31.38 — a small price to pay for something that can reduce utility costs this winter and for many years to come.Â
