Looking for quality clothing is always a challenge — but looking for quality clothing at discount prices is even more so. However, Costco is among one of the many stores that tout great products at low prices. It’s also clear that the Costco Kirkland clothing brand is popular not just for its lower prices but also for overall satisfaction from customers.

That being said, there are a few items of clothing that Costco customers were not happy with.

Sweatshirts, Fleece Jackets and Hoodies

Several customers reported that the Kirkland Signature Unisex Logo Crewneck sweatshirt, priced at $21.99, seemed to be made of cheaper material with a loose and oversized neck. The general fit was described as being boxy with baggy arms and no elastic around the bottom of the sweatshirt.

Kirkland’s Signature Ladies’ Fleece Full Zip Jacket, retailing for $21.99, was described as being made of thin material that could not be considered as fleece and was forming lint-like balls or “pilling” in certain areas. Some customers also felt the jacket sleeves were too long and narrow.

The Kirkland Signature Ladies’ Heavyweight Fleece Hoodie, offered for $21.99, was also disappointing due to customers’ dislike of the stiff hood and thick material. A customer reported washing the hoodie once before wearing, and that fleece came off in the washer and dryer. The material was said to be “pilling” on the inside of the hoodie after it was washed. Some customers also were not pleased with the wide shoulders and shorter arm length.

Women’s and Men’s Pants

Customers found fault with the fit of the Kirkland Signature Ladies’ Active Stretch Pant, priced at $16.99, pointing out that the pants were too short, wide and baggy. Another customer mentioned that the elastic waistband had to be straightened out several times while wearing it.

Kirkland’s Signature Ladies’ Travel Pant, retailing for $17.99, disappointed some customers with the width of the legs and the overall fit being too large. One customer said the zippers on the pants had caused the metal detector alarm to sound at the airport, prompting her to write, “What good are ‘travel pants’ like these?”

The material of the Kirkland Signature Men’s Jean, priced at $9.97, was described by some customers as stretching like rubber. Others commented that the material was “like a trendy spandex” made to look like jeans with fake worn-out patterns on the front. Customers who worked in construction were concerned about the material holding up as well as 100% cotton does.

Kirkland’s Signature Men’s Commuter Pant at $19.99 left a lot to be desired by customers who were not happy with the overall fit. They also commented that the bottom of the pant legs fit too snugly around the ankles.

Slippers and Sneakers

The Kirkland Signature Unisex Shearling Slipper, priced at $29.99, was mentioned by customers as having inconsistent-size stitching on bands around the opening of the slippers. They also said that the decorative bands around the opening of the slippers did not expand.

Kirkland’s Signature Men’s Sneaker, retailing for $32.99, disappointed customers with its thick rubber sole being inappropriately sized and not offering enough support. The shoe layers were said to have started separating, causing a squeaking noise when walking in them. Other customers said the canvas body of the shoe was hard and uncomfortable to wear after a short time.

Men’s Shorts

Customers had some issues with the Kirkland Signature Men’s Swim Short, priced at $6.97. Reviews said the color of the material faded, the material fell apart after a few months (even though it was hand washed), sizing was smaller than expected and a zipper on one of the pockets broke.

Kirkland’s Signature Men’s Performance Short, which cost $6.97, was not without complaints, including the fit being smaller than expected and leg lengths being longer than expected. Other complaints included the shorts having narrow pockets, which made it hard to get a cell phone or wallet in and out easily.

Tips for Avoiding Returns

Costco is known for its good-quality items, but that doesn’t mean they will always be without fault. It’s a good idea to always inspect the quality of the clothing you wish to purchase. Do the seams look securely stitched? Are the buttons on tightly? Look closely at the hems and check for loose threads. Inspect your shoes by checking the stitching, soles and support. Sometimes, in the end, purchasing the item and wearing it at home may be the only way to inspect it closely.
