Costco shoppers may think they’re getting budget-friendly deals on everything on the warehouse’s aisles, but sometimes, that’s not the case. Even bulk deals can end up costing more than what you’d pay for smaller quantities at competing stores.Â
Here are a handful of stores (and examples of items) with way lower prices than Costco.
Aldi
When it comes to bacon, you’d be better off buying it at Aldi rather than Costco. Although Costco sells its Kirkland Signature bacon in a bulk pack of four one-pound packages, its cost per package — $5.39 — is more expensive than Aldi’s. At Aldi, you can pick up a one-pound package of Appleton Farms premium sliced bacon for $4.95 or 72 cents cheaper per package. That means for every four packages you buy, you’ll save $2.88.Â
Walmart
Costco sells 30-roll bulk packs of Kirkland Signature two-ply toilet paper, 380 sheets per roll, for about 79 cents per roll. However, Walmart sells a 12-pack of two-ply Great Value Soft & Strong premium toilet paper with 380 sheets in each mega roll for about 22 cents per roll. That’s more than a 55 cents savings per roll.Â
Another item Walmart has at a lower price than Costco is peanut butter. Walmart sells a 64-ounce jar of Great Value creamy peanut butter for $6.47 or about 10 cents per ounce. Costco sells a two-pack of Naturally More organic peanut butter, with each jar weighing 28 ounces, for $10.20 or about 18 cents per ounce.Â
Dollar Tree
Pass up the Foster Grant reading glasses at Costco. They cost $7.56 each and you have to buy a three-pack, which rings up to $22.69 You can get a much cheaper deal on wide-frame reading glasses at Dollar Tree for only $1.50 each.Â
Another item to forgo at Costco is the 20-count pack of Hallmark recyclable gift bags for $20.99. That’s about $1.05 per bag. At Dollar Tree, you can find two-count packs of holiday bags for $1.50, which comes out to 75 cents per bag.Â
Editor’s note: Pricing and availability may vary depending on location.
