The cost of everyday goods has gone up in recent years, even at Target. Even so, the retailer’s “Expect more. Pay less” motto continues to hold true across much of its selection. This is good news for frugal new parents trying to stock up on baby essentials without going overboard with their budget.
As for what to get, options range from baby bottles and diapers to clothes for infants. Here’s GOBankingRates’ selection of the top items frugal new parents should get at Target.
Are you more of a Walmart shopper? Here are eight things frugal parents should buy at Walmart.
Short Sleeve Cotton Bodysuit
- Price: $12
Babies grow quickly, so you don’t want to spend a ton on new clothes when you’ll need to replace them every few months. These soft cotton bodysuits are perfect for newborns up to 24 months.
It features lap shoulders and convenient snaps for when you need to change your child’s diaper. It’s also easy to clean — simply put it in the washing machine and tumble dry low. What’s even better is that it comes in a pack of four, each one a different pattern and shade of blue. That’s just $3 per bodysuit.
Baby Bottle With Natural Response Nipple
- Price: $22.99
Many babies start using a bottle after a few weeks or so, but even if yours isn’t quite ready for that yet, it’s good to be prepared. Frugal parents can get a three-pack of 9-ounce, clear baby bottles for roughly $8 apiece.
These bottles are BPA-free, dishwasher-safe, feature an anti-colic valve and have a natural response tip designed to control the pace at which your baby drinks milk. They’re also made to prevent dripping, meaning less mess for you to worry about.
Reusable Cloth Diapers
- Price: $12.60
Why spend hundreds of dollars — or more — on disposable diapers when you can save by getting reusable ones? Target sells reusable cloth diapers made from soft material that’s machine washable. They are the perfect size for newborns and also come in a one-size-fits-most version.
Don’t forget to pick up biodegradable, disposable liners. You can get 100 liners for $12. That’s $0.12 per liner. Target does recommend having 24 Inners and six Outers since Inners require laundering after every use, while Outers last a bit longer.
Huggies Natural Care Unscented Baby Wipes
- Price: $1.99 to $21.99 (based on count)
As any parent will tell you, messes happen when you have a baby. That’s why having baby wipes is crucial.
These unscented wipes by Huggies are extra-absorbent and soft, perfect for an infant’s sensitive skin. They come in counts ranging from 56 to 960. These dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic and fragrance-free wipes contain Vitamin E and aloe, so you can use them even on the most sensitive skin.
BabyBjorn Baby Carrier
- Price: $109.99
Being frugal doesn’t mean being cheap. And while you might be able to get some things as hand-me-downs, you’ll want to be extra careful when it comes to equipment for your new child.
This baby carrier has a maximum capacity of 24 pounds and is ideal for your baby’s first year. It’s soft, durable, and machine washable. If you’re a busy parent — and what parent isn’t? — you’ll be glad you have one of these for when it’s just you, the baby and whatever task you have at hand.
Philips Avent Ultra Soft Pacifier
- Price: $6.99
Sometimes, all your baby needs is something to suck on. A good pacifier can serve as a distraction, a comfort or even a sleep aid in some cases.
Geared toward newborns up to six months old, this two-pack of BPA-free silicone pacifiers is designed to appeal to even the fussiest of babies. Each one comes with its own carrying case to keep it sterile. One is arctic white, while the other is green.
