Any retiree knows that when it comes to shopping, it is important to stay on task and on budget with your fixed income. That can be an especially tight line to walk if you are retired and middle class.

However, there’s some good news: retirees can find hundreds of quality products at Costco that can actually save them money on everyday items they need. Here’s a roundup of four Costco purchases that can save middle-class retirees hundreds of dollars.

Costco Hearing Aids

According to Gordon Stein of Cashflow Cookbook, the Costco Hearing Aid Center typically sells three brands of hearing aids, all of which are priced around $1,500 a pair and beat out the price range of $3,500 to $7,000 at specialty hearing aid stores.

“The Costco offerings typically include a two-year warranty, free cleanings and state-of-the-art in-store testing facilities,” Stein went on to explain. “I’m on my second pair of Costco Hearing Aids and couldn’t be more pleased with the product and their service. Customers rave about them in online reviews.”

Prescription Drugs

Robin Valadares, the founder at Financially Fulfilled Physio, highlighted how retirees can save big on their pharmaceutical prescriptions at Costco even as drug prices go up.

“The costs can be a massive burden on a fixed income, but many people don’t realize how competitive Costco’s pharmacy is,” Valadares noted. “Using the Costco pharmacy for both brand-name and generic drugs, you can see significant savings over a year compared to a typical pharmacy. The savings from just a few key medications can be redirected to a savings account or used to offset other expenses.”

Tire and Auto Care

Valadares pointed out that auto maintenance is a necessary expense that can be a real strain on anyone, especially those on a fixed income.

“Costco’s Tire Center offers competitive prices on new tires and includes free services like tire rotations, flat repairs and nitrogen tire inflation,” described Valadares. “By buying your tires here and utilizing the included services, you are saving money on the upfront purchase and on ongoing maintenance costs, giving you more financial flexibility.”

Snacks and Coffee

“Costco snacks are about 50% of the cost of buying them in retail stores,” Stein described. “Even better if you buy Costco coffee and home brew at 50 cents a cup vs. paying $5 at Starbucks.”

Valadares agreed that coffee bought at Costco can help retirees save big, noting “Buying a large bag of coffee beans from Costco drastically reduces the per-cup cost compared to buying smaller bags or, even worse, buying coffee from a cafe.’ He recommended the Kirkland Signature Coffee Beans for $23.99 as a great buy for java-loving retirees.

Additionally, Valadares explained that this simple switch will allow retirees to enjoy a daily ritual while shifting those small, daily savings into investment or “fun” accounts.
