Let’s say you’re walking into BJ’s Wholesale Club with a $100 grocery budget. You need to shop for groceries which can help you make breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the week with some snack options. You don’t want to exceed the $100 spent at checkout and would like to try avoiding purchases that could lead to accidental food waste where possible. What should be on your grocery list?
GOBankingRates spoke to a BJ’s Wholesale Club representative who advised shoppers to stick with BJ’s in-house grocery brand Wellsley Farms instead of shopping name brands. According to the representative, shoppers who opt for Wellsley Farms will get great value without sacrificing quality. Once we knew to shop Wellsley Farms, we carefully reviewed various grocery departments and pulled 10 items to add to shopping lists. The total cost for all ten items came out to $72.13, ensuring shoppers have enough wiggle room for sales tax.
Keep reading to find out which 10 items are best for a $100 grocery budget at BJ’s Wholesale Club.
Wellsley Farms Tilapia Loins
- Price: $9.99
Choosing one item from BJ’s frozen chicken and frozen seafood departments wasn’t an easy task. After some consideration, we picked Wellsley Farms frozen tilapia loins for a couple of reasons.
There are several health benefits found in tilapia, including high levels of vitamin B12 and Omega-3 fatty acids. The tilapia loins can be enjoyed in many creative ways, such as pairing with vegetables and rice or cutting up and adding to a salad for lunch and cook quickly according to the five-star reviews on the BJ’s website. Each bag also weighs in at two pounds, meaning shoppers pay about $5 per pound of tilapia loins.
Wellsley Farms Tater Puffs
- Price: $7.99
The Wellsley Farms tater puffs were our pick from the frozen apps department as an inexpensive swap to ordering fries or tots at a fast-food restaurant or a food delivery app.
The average cost of McDonald’s medium fries in 2024 is $3.29. Buy two orders and you’re paying $6.58. Order three medium fries and that’s close to $10. BJ’s shoppers can snag a six-pound bag of tater puffs at just under $8 and cook as many as they like to save money.
Wellsley Farms Cauliflower Rice
- Price: $8.99
At $8.99 per bag, Wellesley Farms cauliflower rice might seem a bit pricey until you look closely at the specifics.
Each bag weighs four pounds and comes frozen. Because it has a lengthy freezer life and comes with enough cauliflower rice to add into many meals, chances are pretty good you won’t need to make this purchase during every BJ’s outing.
Wellsley Farms Extra Large White Eggs (2 Pack/18 Count)
- Price: $8.79
Wellsley Farms extra-large white eggs are a must-add to BJ’s shopping carts. Each twin pack includes 18 count cartons with eggs with a total of 36 eggs. When we do the math, this comes out to spending about 24 cents per egg.
For big households that go with eggs fast, or smaller households that enjoy meal prepping breakfast and baking, these eggs need to be in your $100 grocery budget.
Wellsley Farms 1% Low-Fat Milk
- Price: $2.62
We added Wellsley Farms 1% low-fat milk to this list because it’s just under $3 for a gallon. If you’re not a 1% low-fat milk fan, BJ’s also sells gallons of whole, reduced fat and skim milk available for under $3 each.
Wellsley Farms Block Sharp Yellow Cheddar Cheese
- Price: $6.99
When picking cheese, we opted for a block of Wellsley Farms sharp yellow cheddar cheese. There were other cheddar cheese options available, including the two-count bags of shredded cheddar from Wellsley Farms for $9.89, but the block won us over thanks to its price tag and the ability to use it as you like.
You can shred the block using a cheese grater or slice into slices for sandwiches, instead of paying a little more for pre-shredded or pre-sliced options.
Wellsley Farms Peanut Butter Pretzels
- Price: $10.79
The Wellsley Farms peanut butter pretzels made the cut for snacking purposes. Think of it as the affordable answer to an impulse snack buy.
Each container is filled with 50-ounces of peanut butter pretzels and can easily be portioned out when packing school lunches or adding snacks for long car rides.
Wellsley Farms Wheat Bread (2 Pack)
- Price: $5.49
Wellsley Farms wheat bread is a deal worth adding to your BJ’s shopping cart, especially if you use up bread quickly. Shoppers receive two loaves in each pack, which comes out to spending about $2.75 per loaf. It’s healthy, delicious and a great value, the trifecta of shopping essentials.
Wellsley Farms Organic Herb Mix
- Price: $2.99
We knew we wanted this list to include some fresh vegetables but did not want the items added to lead to potential food waste either. The BJ’s representative recommended a purchase like Wellsley Farms organic herb mix which contains five ounces of organic mixed greens and herbs for $2.99.
“To fulfill the needs of smart-saving families, BJ’s offers smaller pack sizes of fresh produce compared to other wholesale clubs,” the BJ’s representative told GOBankingRates. “These packs are priced up to 25% less than those found in regular grocery store chains.”
Wellsley Farms Hass Avocados (5 Count)
- Price: $7.49
The last item on our list are Wellsley Farms Hass avocados. Big and small households alike will quickly use these avocados up when adding to sandwiches, salads, omelets, dips and more so there’s less possibility of food waste. Per avocado, BJ’s shoppers also only pay about $1.50 each.
