‘Grand Theft Auto 5’ Is Now the Most Profitable Film, Book or Game Ever

A game about stealing made major money the old-fashioned way.

The mean streets of Los Santos have raked in some serious coin for the developers at Rockstar Games. “Grand Theft Auto V” has taken the top spot as the most financially successful media title of all time. Yes, you read that right — and the money isn’t just referring to one of Trevor, Michael and Franklin’s crazy in-game heists.

Pulling in roughly $6 billion with over 90 million units sold, Rockstar Games’ fifth installment in the “Grand Theft Auto” series has blown blockbuster movies like “Star Wars” and “Gone With the Wind” out of the water in regards to its total financial pull, according to a report by MarketWatch.

The game is set in a fictionalized world of San Andreas — which is eerily similar to star-studded Southern California — and features an open-world format with linear missions from the perspectives of three main characters. Initially released in September 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the game was later re-released multiple times for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC versions.

Despite the series’ continued controversy surrounding its notoriously lewd and violent themes, very few games have seen sustained success in the way that “Grand Theft Auto V” has — especially over the course of nearly five years.

“I think it’s a wild outlier,” Cowen analyst Doug Creutz told MarketWatch. “I think maybe with the exception something Nintendo has made — Mario Brothers — but aside from that there’s never been a console game that’s sold so many units.”
