Many people think of Target for inexpensive, on-trend clothing and household supplies – but not for groceries. However, the big-box store has an expansive and well-stocked grocery section featuring everything from its own house brand – Good & Gather – to everyday favorites such as Cheerios and Ghiradelli.
Here are the top items to buy at Target on a $50 grocery budget.
Milk and Dairy
When it comes to milk, dairy and dairy alternatives, Target has a corner on the market. Merissa Alink, who writes about saving money at Little House Living, said, “Always check Target’s weekly deals.”
You can often save about 50 cents on each gallon of milk compared to other stores. Even organic milk and milk alternatives like soy, almond and oat are often cheaper at Target.
Eggs
Eggs are expensive, but Target is where to turn if you’re looking for a decent deal. Some Target stores sell large packs of 30 eggs for only $6.49. If you’re a fan of omelets, this is the place to stock up.
Pantry Staples
Target is a good place to buy dry foods that last a long time. You can get things like:
- Rice
- Pasta
- Canned vegetables
- Beans
- Spices
These items are usually cheaper at Target than at other stores, so make sure to check them out before you go elsewhere. For example, a can of black beans at Target will set you back 95 cents and the same can will cost you $1.29 at Whole Foods.
Coffee and Tea
If you are a coffee connoisseur or tea fanatic, Target has a wide selection at great prices. It sells ground coffee, coffee pods and a huge variety of tea. You can find both name brands and Target’s own brands for less.
Snacks and Crackers
Target has lots of snacks at low prices. You can find chips, crackers and many other snacks that cost less than at other stores. This includes Target brands and name brands that you know and love. Give Target’s grocery aisles a whirl and comparison shop – you’ll see they often come out on top.
Frozen Foods
Don’t forget to check the freezer section at Target – it’s packed with deals. Everything from frozen vegetables (for stir-fries) and fruits (smoothies) to tasty ready-to-eat meals – it’s the place to fill your freezer. For example, you can get the popular meat-substitute Gardein Plant-Based Frozen Ground Be’f for only $5.19 a bag, whereas at local grocery stories it can cost $6 and up.
Yogurt
Yogurt at Target is often cheaper than at grocery stores. This includes regular yogurt and Greek yogurt. Buying bigger tubs or packs with multiple yogurts can save you even more money.
Bread and Bakery Items
Bread from big brands is usually cheaper at Target. This is also true for other baked goods. It’s a good place to buy bread for sandwiches and breakfast foods.
Seasonal Produce
Target is getting better at selling fresh fruits and vegetables. When certain fruits or vegetables are in season, you can find good deals on them. Check the Target app for extra savings on produce.
Household Essentials
While these aren’t food, things like dish soap, laundry soap and paper towels are often cheaper at Target. Buying these at Target can help you save money for food shopping later.
Alink also mentions, “Target often has special deals where you get a gift card when you buy a certain amount of food. These are good times to buy things you use a lot.”
If you use the Target app and a Target credit card, you can save even more money.
