Gift cards make for great presents, but all too often, many end up forgotten in drawers. Indeed, almost half of Americans — 47% — say they have at least one unused gift card, voucher or store credit, adding up to $21 billion nationwide, according to a 2022 CreditCards.com poll.

And CNN reported in 2023 that the average amount on unused gift cards is $175. For retailers — such as Target — this is a win-win situation, as gift cards are paid for right away.

Target offers gift cards that range in value from $5 to $500. They are available for purchase at Target stores, on Target’s website and at many other retailers, including Kroger, Albertsons, CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens.

Here are four ways you can get the most out of your Target gift cards.

Look For Sales and Discounts

To get more value out of your Target gift cards, pay attention to the timing of seasonal sales, promotions and discounts.

That way, you’ll get more for your money, allowing you to use your gift card on more items.

Use Them at Starbucks or CVS In-Store

As Target noted on its website, you can also use the retailer’s gift cards at Starbucks locations and CVS pharmacies that are within Target stores, as well as in-store at Target Optical.

Using your gift cards at these in-store Target locations gives you more choices on what to purchase, as you’re not limited to just Target merchandise.

Gift Them

If you have no use for your Target gift cards at all, you can gift them and make someone else happy rather than letting them accumulate dust in your drawer.

You can regift them as birthday or holiday presents, or even as a wedding present.

Sell or Trade Them

If you have a Target gift card that you don’t want to use at Target, one option is to sell it. You can use sites such as CardCash and Raise, which allow you to sell unwanted gift cards. With CardCash, you can even trade your gift cards for those of other retailers.

CardCash noted on its website that when you sell your gift cards, you get paid via check, the automated clearing house system or PayPal.
