Sleek packaging, crisp visuals and the power of innovative technology at your fingertips — it’s all part of the Apple experience. But what happens when that experience doesn’t meet your expectations? Thankfully, Apple has you covered with its return policy. Here’s a guide to help you understand the Apple return policy and how to go about returning a product if the need arises.
Apple Return Time Frames
General Return Window
Don’t make the mistake of thinking you’ll have 30 days to return your Apple product. According to the Apple return policy, you only have a 14-day return window.
That means from the day you receive your Apple product — whether you made your purchase online or in-store — you have two weeks to decide if you’re happy with it.
Special Holiday or Promotional Return Extensions
During the holiday season, Apple gives shoppers more time for returns. This period usually starts in early November and lasts until early January — but only for items purchased up to Dec. 25. Items purchased after that are subject to Apple’s 14-day return policy.
Check Apple’s website starting in November of each year to view its current holiday return policy.
Exceptions for Specific Categories
Not all items are eligible for returns. These include the following:
- Opened software with a printed license
- Electronic software downloads
- Software upgrades
- Apple gift cards
- Apple Developer products
- Apple print products
Good To Know
The return window for Apple products depends on how you made the purchase:
- In-store purchases: Return period starts on the purchase date.
- Online orders: Return period begins the day you receive the item.
What Apple Items Are Eligible for Return?
To be eligible for a return, items must be:
- Unused
- In original packaging
- In resalable condition, if applicable
- Returned within 14 calendar days of purchase or delivery — extended during holidays
You should also include cords, adapters and documentation that was included when you bought the product.
Non-Returnable Items
Here is the list of non-returnable items, according to the Apple website:
- Opened software:
- If software is opened, however, it can still be returned if it hasn’t been installed on any computer. However, if the software contains a printed software license on the outside of the packaging that you can view without opening it, the software may not be returned if the seal or sticker on the software packaging is broken.
- An exception to this policy is that you can return Apple software if you do not agree with the licensing terms, but you cannot retain or use any copies of the returned software.
- Electronic software downloads.
- Software up-to-date program products or software upgrades.
- Apple gift cards — includes previous generation Apple Store gift cards and App Store and iTunes gift cards.
- Apple developer products, such as membership, technical support incidents, WWDC tickets, etc.
Apple Refund Options
Here are Apple’s refund options:
- Refund to original payment method: Apple typically refunds to the original payment method.
- Exchange for another item: Exchanges are allowed for eligible products, subject to availability and return conditions.
- Store credit option: When a receipt cannot be located, Apple will issue a store credit.
Possible Apple Return Deductions
Apple doesn’t typically charge restocking fees, but if you have an item custom-configured, you may only get a partial refund.
You will receive a refund of your shipping fees only if it is determined that Apple is responsible for the error.
Apple Refund Timeline
You can expect your Apple refunds within five to 10 days.
Refunds are dependent on how fast your bank can process the refund.
Common Apple Return Issues and How To Solve Them
Here are common return issues and possible solutions:
Missing Receipt
Apple tracks its purchases at the store and online. If you don’t have a receipt, it shouldn’t be a problem since Apple can track it internally.
Damaged or Defective Items
If you suspect your item is damaged or defective, do the following:
- Report it within the 14-day window for returns.
- Contact Apple Support online or call 1-800-MY-APPLE to report the issue.
- Provide your order number, photo and any relevant product details.
- Apple may repair or offer a replacement.
Missed the Return Deadline
Do you have options if you miss the return deadline? Maybe. Here are some possible solutions:
- If you have AppleCare Coverage, you may be eligible for repairs, replacements or limited accidental damage support.
- You can resell or trade your Apple product.
- Talk to customer service to see if they can make an exception.
Partial Refunds
Apple will issue a partial refund for the following:
- Item is damaged or used.
- Item has missing or used parts.
- Item shows signs of wear or misuse, or is returned outside the return window without prior approval.
- Customized items.
How To Start an Apple Return
To begin an Apple return, there are two options: ship your item back or visit an Apple store to make the return.
Ship Your Item Back
- Log in to your Apple account and go to the “Order Listing” page. There, you’ll find all the details about your order and you can initiate the return process.
- After you start your return, Apple will send you a return label via email.
- Print the label and stick it to your package.
- Make sure you return the item in its original packaging with all accessories, documentation and manuals included.
- Check your order status for updated return and refund information.
Go to an Apple Store to Return Your Item
If you visit an Apple store to return your item, you will receive a refund at that time.
However, if returning Apple purchases of $750 or more for cash, cash equivalent or check, you’ll receive a refund check within 10 business days.
