With inflation driving up the cost of nearly everything, it can feel like prices only ever go up. Despite the financial squeeze of the past few years, some products have actually become cheaper since 2019. From tech gadgets to everyday goods, certain items have bucked the trend.

From Experian’s analysis of the August Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer price index (CPI) report, these 6 things are more affordable now than they were five years ago:

Telephone Hardware and Other Consumer Information Items

The biggest price drop comes from this category, which is made up of around 50% cell phones and 50% other items like home-based phones and smartwatches. Prices have plummeted by an impressive 58% since 2019, making these devices more accessible than ever.

Televisions

The cost of a good television has plunged over the last five years, with prices dropping by nearly 46%. As more advanced technology like 4K and OLED become standard, older models — often still great quality — are sold at bargain prices. For example, while not identical models, an 82-inch Samsung Q90 QLED 4K was $6,999 in 2019, whereas now you’ll get an 82-inch Samsung QN90D Neo QLED for $4,799.

Computer Software and Accessories

Items in this category are 27% cheaper than five years ago (though prices have increased by 1.1% since last year), making it easier for consumers to access essential programs and hardware upgrades without spending a fortune. Cloud services and subscription models have changed the game, which means top-tier software without the hefty upfront costs is more accessible.

Women’s Dresses

Fashion has gotten cheaper, with women’s dresses down 15%. Fast fashion and online shopping have driven down costs, giving consumers more choices at lower prices. Retailers are cutting costs and passing the savings on to buyers. Whether refreshing your wardrobe or picking up a special occasion dress, you won’t spend as much as you would have a few years ago.

Toys

If you’re shopping for toys you’ll find relief as they saw a price drop of around 15%. Whether due to advancements in production or competitive pressure from online marketplaces, many popular toys are more affordable today than in 2019. For example, while 2019’s Astronaut Barbie was $27.99, the 2024 version will only set you back between $17.99 and $19.99 and comes with accessories.

Computers, Peripherals and Smart Home Devices

This category has seen a price drop of nearly 12%. From speakers to laptops, the smart home and tech markets are booming, with new players pushing prices down. Competition has made smart home tech more accessible than ever. Peripherals like keyboards and monitors are more affordable too. The basic Windows Surface X laptop/tablet hybrid cost around $1,300 in 2019, whereas today’s model with advanced AI and features comes in at just under $1,000.

Not everything has been hit by inflation. While essentials like food and housing may feel more expensive, technology and some consumer goods have seen prices fall over the last five years. Whether you’re shopping for electronics or wardrobe essentials, there are still deals to be found in a time of rising costs. So, while inflation bites in some areas, smart shopping can help you save on items that are now cheaper than ever.
