As one of the most popular shopping days, Black Friday — the day after Thanksgiving — often raises the question: Are banks open on Black Friday? While you might be planning to shop online this year, understanding your banking options is important. Keep reading to learn about what banks are open for Black Friday.

Bank Hours on Black Friday

Many companies close on Black Friday so employees can enjoy the day after Thanksgiving, but Black Friday isn’t a federal holiday. Most banks are open because it’s not one of the recognized bank holidays in 2025. However, some branches might have limited holiday hours.

Although Black Friday isn’t officially recognized by the federal government, many states do recognize the day after Thanksgiving as a state holiday for one reason or another. That recognition isn’t necessarily in honor of Black Friday. Indiana uses the day after Thanksgiving to celebrate President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, for example, whereas Nevada has it designated as Family Day. Keep in mind that banks and credit unions located in states that recognize the day after Thanksgiving as a holiday don’t always take the day off.

To avoid making a wasted trip to your local branch, call first to see if standard operating hours are in place.

Thanksgiving Bank Hours

Thanksgiving, however, is recognized as a federal holiday — meaning banks are typically closed that day. While you won’t be able to perform in-person banking tasks on Thanksgiving, you can still access online or mobile banking, which allows you to manage your accounts, deposit checks, transfer money and more. You can also visit an ATM if you’d like to deposit a check in person or access cash.

If you do need to go in person to your bank, the majority of banks should reopen the day after Thanksgiving (which is Black Friday).

Alternative Banking Options

Aside from in-person banking, most banks allow account holders to perform banking tasks on their own via online or mobile banking. And of course, most ATMs remain open 24/7 for tasks such as check and cash deposit and cash withdrawal.

If you need a money order or to cash a check on a bank holiday, such as Thanksgiving, you may be surprised to learn that many grocery stores can do this for a fee.

But if you’re concerned about your banking options on Black Friday, don’t be — odds are your bank will be open during its normal hours.
