To start the new year off right, you might want to drop by your bank and make sure your finances are in order. But because New Year’s Day is a standard Federal Reserve bank holiday, celebrated by most — if not all — banks, be sure to visit your bank before then.
Use this guide to find out if your bank is open on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, and what you can do when you can’t access in-person banking.
Bank Hours on New Year’s Day
New Year’s Day is a Federal Reserve bank holiday, so most banks will be closed on Jan. 1.
Keep in mind, however, that many financial institutions have online and mobile banking options that you’ll still be able to access — even if your local branch is closed.
New Year’s Eve Bank Hours
Banks are typically open on New Year’s Eve. The exception is when New Year’s Eve happens to fall on a Sunday, during which banks are always closed. But on any other day of the week, the majority of banks remain operating and only close for New Year’s Day.
If you have business with your bank that you’re hoping to attend to on New Year’s Eve, it’s safest to call ahead and confirm with your preferred branch. Even if they’re open, they may have reduced hours.
Alternative Banking Options
Online banking and ATMs allow you to access your funds even if your bank is closed. Many ATMs are open 24/7, and many bank branches even have drive-thru ATMs that are open when the bank itself is closed.
If you need to purchase a money order, options are still available. The trick is finding a provider that stays open long enough for you to complete the transaction. For example, Walmart sells money orders at its Supercenter and Neighborhood Market stores, which are open on the New Year’s holidays.
When Banks Reopen After New Year’s Day
The majority of banks reopen the day after New Year’s Day, so Jan. 2. The only time this changes is if the new year happens to strike on a Saturday, and Jan. 2 is Sunday; in which case your bank would remain closed for the weekend and reopen on Monday.
Unlike some companies which may take an extended holiday, bank customers should remember that banks really only close on federal holidays and Sundays. Most any other day, your bank will be up and running as per usual.
