Dollar General is a great source of discounted household goods, pet products, toys, and even food and clothing. In spite of the name, everything in the store is not a dollar. But most items are an incredible value. Especially with inflation still very high and many people concerned about a recession, shopping at discount stores like Dollar General can help keep your food budget in control.

Dollar General and Dollar General online both accept many payment methods to make checkout easy online and at its 18,000 retail stores across 47 states.  

Can I Use Apple Pay at Dollar General?

You may wonder if you can use Apple Pay at Dollar General. The answer is, no, you can’t use Apple Pay at Dollar General online or in Dollar General stores. It is not listed as a payment method.

If you have an Apple Card, which is a MasterCard linked to your Apple Pay account, you can use your Apple Card at check-out in Dollar General stores.

What Payment Methods Does Dollar General Accept?

When you shop in Dollar General stores, you can use credit cards including American Express, Discover, MasterCard and Visa. You can also use debit cards or pre-paid debit cards, including those issued by MasterCard or Visa. Dollar General stores also accept cash and checks.

You can also use your SNAP EBT pre-paid debit on qualified purchases in Dollar General stores.

Qualified purchases for SNAP EBT transactions include food items prepared at home and seeds and plants used to grow food to eat at home.

You cannot use your SNAP EBT card, formerly known as food stamps, at Dollar General stores to purchase non-food items such as cleaning supplies, hygiene products, paper goods, pet items, vitamins, supplements or over-the-counter medicines.

At select stores, you may be able to use the DG GO! app to pay by applying a stored debit or credit card or your PayPal account. You can skip the checkout line and use a contactless payment form. The DG GO! contactless payment service is not available in all stores.

Can I Use My Apple Card at Dollar General?

You cannot use Apple Pay, PayPal or other online payment methods, such as Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet, in stores.

Your Apple Card, which is linked to your Apple Pay account, is a Mastercard. So, you can use that to pay in Dollar General stores nationwide and earn 3% cash back on all your purchases.

Likewise, if you have a MasterCard, which is issued by Synchrony Bank, you can use that for your Dollar General retail transactions in stores. You will earn 2% cash back on all purchases in retail stores.

Can I Pay With My Phone at Dollar General?

If you are in a Dollar General store looking forward to taking advantage of all the bargains, you won’t be able to use the digital wallet on your smartphone to pay. However, in select Dollar General locations, you may be able to use the DG GO! app for contactless payments.

To use DG GO! in stores, scan your selected items with your smartphone as you shop using the app. Find and apply your coupons and discounts. Then, click to pay within the app using a stored credit card, debit card, pre-paid card or PayPal.

The DG GO! app is available on the App Store for iPhone users and on Google Play for Android phones.

Note that you will not be able to use SNAP EBT to pay if you pay through DG GO! at Dollar General stores that allow in-app, contactless payments.

How To Shop Online at Dollar General

At Dollar General’s website, you can choose your items, apply DG Store Coupons for added savings and checkout quickly online. You can opt to pick up items at a local Dollar General store or you can have them shipped directly to your home.

If you choose store pick-up, you’ll be asked to select a pick-up time at checkout.

Before you shop at Dollar General online, you’ll be asked to create an account with a password. This takes less than a minute. When you create your account, you can opt-in to receive deals and savings through SMS text messaging, email or both.

What Forms of Payment Does Dollar General Accept Online?

Dollar General online accepts MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover as online payment methods, as well as PayPal. It does not accept Apple Pay or other digital wallets as a form of payment. But you can still use your Apple Card for online payments, since it’s issued by MasterCard.

Unfortunately, at this time online purchases made at Dollar General cannot be paid with SNAP EBT cards, but that could change in the future as more companies begin accepting SNAP EBT for online payments of qualified items.

Can I Pay With My Phone for Dollar General Online Purchases?

If you are shopping online, you can use the PayPal app on your phone at checkout. You can shop online at Dollar General on your phone and then use a credit card, debit card or the PayPal app to check out.

If you use PayPal as your form at payment and choose to fund the transaction through PayPal Credit, you can also earn 3% cash back on your purchases.

You can also use your Apple Card as a MasterCard at checkout, but you can’t use Apple Pay through your digital wallet.

If you can’t use Apple Pay at Dollar General, you may wonder what discount stores and online retailers do accept Apple Pay.

Apple Pay is accepted at many brick-and-mortar locations, including 85% of all U.S. retailers. You can use Apple Pay on your iPhone at any retail store that accepts contactless payments using NFC technology. Look for the Apple Pay symbol or  the wireless NFC symbol at the cash register if you aren’t sure if you can use Apple Pay at a specific store.

Remember, you can use your Apple Card at many locations that don’t accept Apple Pay, as long as the store accepts MasterCard as a form of payment.

You can also use Apple Pay online on many websites.

As one of the top retailers in the U.S., Dollar General offers a variety of payment methods in their stores and online, including cash, checks, and most major credit cards. In-store checkouts, however, are not equipped with NFC technology to accept Apple Pay at the point-of-sale. Dollar General’s website also does not accept Apple Pay. However, you can pay with your Apple Card online and in stores, since it is affiliated with MasterCard credit cards.
