Many banks depend heavily on fees as a source of revenue. Truist, formed from a merger between BB&T Bank and SunTrust, is no exception. Truist offers a wide array of checking and savings accounts. All of these options, however, at least hold the potential for added fees.

But by utilizing the right combination of cash on hand, deposits or other strategies, depositors can often avoid such charges. Learn about the accounts Truist offers and what you can do to either minimize or circumvent these fees.

Truist Overdraft Fees

Truist charges $36 per overdraft but depositors have two options for managing this fee.

Overdraft Coverage

Customers must choose to opt-in to Overdraft Coverage so that the bank may cover the overdraft and charge the fee. Typically, accounts default to an opt-out option. This means that the bank will decline any transactions where the funds are not available. You are not charged a fee in this instance.

However, when users choose to opt-in, Truist will cover these transactions and charge you the overdraft fee. In cases where the transaction is under $5, there will be no overdraft fee.

Overdraft Protection

Truist also offers Overdraft Protection. You can link another deposit account or credit card to the protected account, and the funds needed to cover the overdraft will be withdrawn from that account rather than being covered by Truist.

As long as there is enough money in the linked account to cover the transaction, there is no fee for Overdraft Protection.

Other Common Truist Fees

You might run into the following fees at Truist, which apply to most accounts. Fees may vary depending on the account type and specific terms.

Fee Amount Charged
Out-of-network domestic ATM $3 + ATM owner fees
Out-of-network international ATM $5 + ATM owner fees + 3% of transaction
Overdraft $36
Domestic wire transfer $15 incoming, $30 outgoing
International wire transfer $20 incoming, $65 outgoing
Stop payment $35

How To Avoid Truist Fees: 4 Tips

For families struggling just to cover their bills, the idea of added charges merely for the right to conduct deposits and withdrawals can seem daunting. Fortunately, depositors have multiple options for avoiding such costs.

Maintain a Minimum Balance

With both checking and savings accounts, the fee is waived for those who maintain a minimum balance.

  • Truist One Checking: $500 average daily balance across related Truist accounts
  • Truist Wealth Checking: $25,000 daily balance in Wealth Checking or Money Market Account or $100,000 across Truist accounts
  • Truist One Savings: $300 daily balance
  • Money Market Account: $15,000 average daily balance

Set Up Direct Deposit

Most of the bank’s checking accounts have the option to waive the fee with a minimum amount of direct deposits per month.

  • Truist One Checking: $500 or more in direct deposits
  • Truist Confidence Checking: $500 or more in direct deposits

Link Accounts

In some cases, linking your banking accounts can help avoid monthly fees. Some accounts require a minimum balance on combined accounts to waive the fee, rather than just in the main account.

You can also have some fees waived by linking a Truist Small Business checking account.

Age-Based Fee Waivers

Some accounts waive fees for younger or older customers:

  • Students under 25: No maintenance fees on Truist One Checking and Truist Confidence Checking
  • Seniors 62+: Fees waived on Truist One Checking and Truist Confidence Checking

Conclusion

Truist provides resources to help guide your banking and loan decisions. Their Money and Mindset pages offer a wealth of information on managing your finances, covering topics such as budgeting, investing, paying for education, and starting a family, among many others.
